Daily Thoughts - 10/30/2015

Daily Thoughts: As I celebrated mass this morning and read the Gospel (Luke 14: 1-6) I could not help but think about all the article, comments, reflections and commentaries that I have heard and read over the last two years concerning the Synod of the Family. Many of the comments concerned the doctrine and laws of the Church and people’s concerns as to whether things would change or not. There were fights over words and translations. There were comments, articles and reflections from the proverbial right and left, conservative and liberal, traditionalists and progressives. There was talk about remaining true to dogma, doctrine and law. There was talk about mercy, forgiveness and compassion.

If we listen to the Gospel today Jesus is confronted in his day with perhaps the same issues that Pope Francis is confronted with today. The religious leadership of Jesus’ time is concerned about the law. You do not eat with tax collectors and sinners and you do not heal on the Sabbath! Jesus meanwhile is concerned about the person in front of him, a man struggling and while the law says “no healing today,” Jesus responds with mercy and compassion.

I don’t know what will happen with the Synod on the Family. I don’t know what will happen with the rest of Pope Francis’ journey as pope but what I take way from today’s Gospel is the hope that God will bless Pope Francis with the strength and courage to always see the person, the people, in need and respond to them out of mercy, compassion, forgiveness and love and to help and teach us to do the same.

Yes, I know that laws, doctrines and dogmas are important but if I read the Gospel right today, when needed mercy, compassion, forgiveness and love always trumps law, doctrine and dogma!

Have a great Friday everyone!

Daily Prayer: (Remembering my mother today on the fourth anniversary of her death.) – Good Saint Rita, during your entire life on earth you found your happiness by following the will of God. Help us to be as trusting of God in all of what God asks of us this day and always. Help us this day to give ourselves to God as you did, without limit, without fear, without counting the cost. Help us to be – generous in serving the needs of others, patient in all difficulties, forgiving toward all who hurt us. Help us to learn more deeply the great mystery of the Cross of Jesus, so that by embracing it as you did, we may come to experience its power to heal and to save. Amen (Adapted from a Prayer to St. Rita of Cascia)

A Runner’s Thoughts: Some words of inspiration and faith for today are – “Running isn't a sport for pretty [people]...It's about the sweat in your hair and the blisters on your feet. It’s the frozen spit on your chin and the nausea in your gut. It's about throbbing calves and cramps at midnight that are strong enough to wake the dead. It's about getting out the door and running when the rest of the world is only dreaming about having the passion that you need to live each and every day with. It's about being on a lonely road and running like a champion even when there's not a single soul in sight to cheer you on. Running is all about having the desire to train and persevere until every fiber in your legs, mind, and heart is turned to steel. And when you've finally forged hard enough, you will have become the best runner you can be. And that's all that you can ask for.” (Paul Maurer, The Gift - A Runner's Story) And if you add the word faith alongside the word running you have a picture of a runner and a person of faith!

Daily Blessing: Friday greetings and blessings to all. I pray that your day has begun well, if not please know you have been in my prayers since very early this morning. In about an hour or so I will celebrate mass in memory of my mother on this the fourth anniversary of her passing and I will ask her to bless us with her heavenly spirit today, so if things aren’t going well trust that they will get better!

After mass at some point this morning I will begin my journey west to great state of Indiana. I will be celebrating a parish mission from Saturday to Wednesday at St. Bartholomew Parish in Columbus, Indiana which is located in south central Indiana. The parish is beginning its 175 Anniversary celebration with the mission and I am honored to be a part of the celebration. I would ask your prayers this coming week for the good people of St, Bartholomew’s and for their preacher.

My prayer of blessing for everyone today is adapted from a prayer known as Saint Patrick's Breastplate – I ask God’s blessing be upon all of us today so that Christ will be with us; Christ will be before us; Christ will be behind us; Christ will be in us; Christ will be beneath us; Christ will be above us; Christ will be on our right; Christ will be on our left; Christ will be where we lie; Christ will be where we sit; Christ will be where we arise; Christ will be in the hearts of every person who thinks of us; Christ will be in the mouth of every person who speaks of us; Christ will be in every eye that sees us; Christ will be in every ear that hears us; God’s blessings through Christ be upon all of us this day! Have a great Friday everyone. Peace in Christ’s Passion…Fr. Paul

Daily Thoughts - 10/29/2015

Daily Thoughts: “If God is for us who can be against us?” (Romans 8: 31b) This verse and the verses that follow in today first reading (Romans 8: 31b – 39) is one of my favorite passages in St. Paul’s letters. The verses Romans 8:38-39; “For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor present things, nor future things, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord” sits on the wall over my desk. It is a passage in St. Paul that we should read every morning before we do anything and every evening as we close our eyes to sleep.

Think about it, Paul’s question to us is – “if God is for us who can be against us?” Paul’s answer is nobody and nothing! A second question is – “who or what can separate us for God’s love?” It seems that Paul’s answer to this question is the same, nothing and no one! However, that is not really true because for me Paul leaves out one thing – us. We are the only ones who can separate us from God’s love. We are the only ones who can get in the way.

Our challenge today and every day, if I can paraphrase Jesus in today’s Gospel, “[We] must continue on [our] way today, tomorrow, and the following day.” (Luke 13: 33) but we do it knowing that God is for us and nothing but ourselves can separate us from God’s love. Thus if we are true, faithful, joyful, hopeful and committed to our friendship with God it is always going to be a great day!

Have a great Thursday everyone!

Daily Prayer: O God, lover of all who hope in you, without whom nothing has foundation, nothing is holy, grace us in abundance with your love, compassion and mercy and grant that, with you as our friend and guide, we may use the good gifts that are within and around us in such a way so that we will hold fast to a hope that will endure. We make our prayer today through Jesus Christ our Lord in whom the love of God for us is always present. Amen!

A Runner’s Thoughts: “I run because long after my footprints fade away, maybe I will have inspired a few to reject the easy path, hit the trails, put one foot in front of the other, and come to the same conclusion I did: I run because it always takes me where I want to go.” (Dean Karnazes) And I believe, I have faith in God, in Christ, in the Spirit, because long after I am gone maybe I will have inspired a few to reject the easy road, hit the Eucharist, prayer and community, put one foot in front of the other, and come to the same conclusion I did: I believe because it always takes me to God’s love!

Daily Blessing: Thursday greetings and blessings to all. I hope your morning is going well; it was a busy one for me. The day here in Pelham looks to be a nice one. It seems the heavy rain from yesterday has finally passed and there is some brightness in the sky. I know the day is going to be a nice one because the leaf blowers and lawn mowers have already started. I hope it will be a nice day wherever you are.

It will be a busy day for me as I make final preparations to head out tomorrow for Indiana and a mission at St. Bartholomew’s Parish in Columbus, Indiana begin on Saturday. I have a mass at the Wartburg Home this morning and the rest of the day will be spent getting my things together to make the journey west.

As this week winds down I offer this prayer of blessing for all of you today – Loving God, give us friends who will love us for who and what we are, and keep ever burning before our vagrant steps the kindly light of hope... And though we come not within sight of the castles of our dreams, teach us to be thankful for life, and for time's olden memories that are good and heartwarming. And may the evening's twilight find us gentle still and at peace. Blessings to all – Amen! Peace in Christ’s Passion…Fr. Paul

Daily Thoughts - 10/28/2015

Daily Thoughts: As we celebrate the Feast of Sts. Simon and Jude today, two apostles, two friends of Jesus, the thoughts I would like to offer you today comes from one of my favorite authors, Barbara Brown Taylor. Barbara writes about what it means to be a priest. Her thoughts have given me food for thought recently and so I offer them to you today.

“...a priest is someone willing to stand between a God and a people who are longing for one another's love, turning back and forth between them with no hope of tending either as well as each deserves. To be a priest is to serve a God who never stops calling people to do more justice and love more mercy, and simultaneously to serve people who nine times out of ten are just looking for a safe place to rest. To be a priest is to know that things are not as they should be and yet to care for them the way they are.”

I hope I live up to what it means to be a priest most of the time. I know at times I do fail and I pray that my failures do not hurt others or keep them from God. I do know that things are not as they should be and I hope and pray that I do care for all the way they are!

I have a great Wednesday everyone!

Daily Prayer: God of peace, we bless you and we thank you because you have sent us your beloved Son, Jesus, the source of all peace. Give us hearts open to the needs of all our sisters and brothers, so that we may be better able to build true peace. Remember Father of mercy, all who are in pain, who suffer and die in the cause of a more just and peaceful world. For people of every race, of every creed, of every tongue – may your kingdom come. Amen. (Adapted from a prayer by Pope Paul VI)

A Runner’s Thoughts: “It takes practice and perseverance, but as long as I hold on to my dreams, I know they'll become a reality.” (Florence Griffith Joyner) So to in the spiritual life…prayer takes practice and perseverance and if we hold on to the dream the Kingdom will become a reality in our life!

Daily Blessing: Wednesday blessings and greetings to all. I hope this finds you having a good day if not hang in there it will get better! We are expecting lots of rain here in Pelham today however it hasn’t started yet. It will certain be a good day to be indoors getting work done. I am preparing to hit the road at the end of the week so I need to get my desk cleared. May you be able to run through the rain drops if needed but if not may you feel God’s gentle rain as the grace of God’s presence and love in your heart!

My prayer of blessing today – Loving God, Creator of this new day, bless us so that we may live your truth in everything we do today. That we may express your love to everyone we meet. Touch us with your grace so that we may share our enthusiasm and make each moment better; so that we may give life to our hopes; so that we may walk by faith; so that we may dance and sing to your music of life; so that we will always embrace your blessings and your love and make today and everyday worth remembering. Amen! Have a great Wednesday everyone! Peace in Christ’s Passion…Fr. Paul
