Daily Thoughts - 12/20/2015

Daily Thoughts: Many years ago I decided that the Christmas after my mother died I would not go anywhere for Christmas. It had been over 30 years since I had woken up in my own bed on Christmas. It had been over 30 years since I had not travel during the busy holiday season. Yet, when the time came I once again chose to pack my bags and wake up in a bed other than my own on Christmas, I needed to be with the important people in my life!

There are some people who like to have people around them all the time, while others like solitude more often than not.  At times in life all of us like doing things by ourselves. We do not want any interruptions and we find that we can get the task done faster if we have the time to ourselves. However, there are moments in all of our lives when we need people there. In the Gospel today once again we are told that Mary makes her way to Elizabeth. The story does not say why Mary went, just that she went in haste. I think Mary realize that this is one of those moment when she and Elizabeth did not want to be alone. When the gift of family and friends was very important.

In five days we will celebrate the gift of Christmas and many people will make haste to be with others. There is something in each of us that knows that at this time of the year we do not want to be alone. We can be with many or just an important few. There is something special about this time of the year. Perhaps it is the need to hear the voice of God in the people we love. Perhaps it is the chance to be enlivened by the presence of God by celebrating with people important in our life. Perhaps it is being reminded that God has chosen us no matter how unimportant we think we are. Perhaps it is because we need to believe that God is truly with us!

Have a blessed and holy Sunday everyone and don’t forget to give God a little time today!

Daily Prayer: O God of Christmas wonder, grace us with the humble caring faith and trusting wisdom of Elizabeth and Mary. May we too listen to our hearts and respond to the voice of God in our lives so that we to will always say “yes” to God’s invitation as we continue our journey through this life to the gift of everlasting life. Amen!

A Runner’s Thoughts: “And while these pounds were being shed, while the physiological miracles were occurring with the heart and muscle and metabolism, psychological marvels were taking place as well. Just so, the world over, bodies, minds, and souls are constantly being born again, during miles on the road.”  (George Sheehan)

Daily Blessing: Sunday greetings and blessings to all. It is five days until Christmas and four days until we start celebrating the gift of Christmas Mass. I hope everyone is in good spirits today and the busyness of your Christmas preparations is winding down. It looks to be a sunny day here in Pelham with the temperatures still on the chilly side but they are to once again warm up as the week goes on. I hope the weather in your area is good especially if you have to travel during this upcoming week!

As we celebrate this Fourth Sunday of Advent, as we recall Elizabeth and Mary’s meeting and Elizabeth’s respond to hearing Mary’s voice and the presence of God she found in that voice. Let us ask God to bless us with the faith and trust of Elizabeth and Mary today.

Bless us, O God, in the loving spirits of Elizabeth and Mary; bless us today body and soul; bless our dreams, our words and our actions; bless our journeys; bless all that we have and all that we are that we will always live our lives to your greater honor.

Bless us with the grace of your mercy to be compassionate, forgiving and hopeful that all you have called us to be will bring about your presence in our lives and in the lives of all we meet. Help us to be gentle and kind especially when many around us are not.

Gift us with the grace to say “yes” even when we are unsure where it will take us. Help us to trust in your ever present love. Amen. Sunday blessings to all! Peace in Christ’s Passion…Fr. Paul
